Cambridge university day 3

Today there were Almond Croissants for Breakfast.
With the squashy stuff in.
:)

We had breakfast and then walked to the Cavendish Laboratory. We did lab practicals on the conical pendulum- which in theory is fascinating, but in practice was a disaster as we managed to get the sting stuck in the dowel and then lose the pendulum.
Bigger knots are the answer!
We then looked at the youngs slits experiment, and then at the effect of different shaped gratings- mostly letter shaped gratings when a laser is passed through them.
I did take some photos but they just look like a load of red dots on a screen in the dark.

After the lab sessions we had a Quantum mechanics lecture and then Lunch.

Traff Picked me up from Churchill college and was laughing at me because I told him Corpus christi looked like hogwarts.
I had a sleep in the car on the way home- I'm just so rock n roll.
It feels like it should be wednesday already- I'm not looking forward to 4 more days of work before the weekend. My brain needs a rest!

Cambridge University Day 2

We had breakfast in the university cafeteria- I had a fry up- In honesty I was still too full from last night but I really wanted to eat fried potatoes and bacon for breakfast.
Tomorrow I will be more healthy.

We spent all morning looking at maths problems- With an emphasis on problem solving.
I regret watching the harry potter films.
It was a grave error.
The majority of the maths was just A level stuff so nothing really horrible, but almost all of it was in totally unfamiliar context- lots of ropes and chains and ignoring resistance or gravity. So lots of thinking and discussion.

We finished doing maths at 4pm having started at 9am to cover university admissions and how the application process works- In complete honesty that is why I am here and I'm so tired from doing all the problem solving I'm not sure I've retained any of it!
I took loads of notes though!

After the lecture- at 5pm we went into Cambridge

Dinner was at Corpus Christi College, We arrived early and one of the lecturers who lives there gave us a tour- He showed us the quad

Told us about the library- they hold books from the 15th century- Saved when then monasteries were destroyed by henry the eighth.

He showed us the 13th century building- now used as halls of residence, but what was the original college.

And the masters lodge.

Behind it you can see the original Cavendish Laboratory.

And he showed us the chapel

Dinner was amazing- Corpus Christi actually does hold feasts in their dining hall- which was very fitting as it reminds me greatly of harry potter! This was much more exciting than then dinner we had yesterday night! The food was served canteen style- And it was excellent. I have learned mostly this weekend that Cambridge university students are exceptionally well fed.

This was followed by an estimation lecture at Corpus Christi with a group of students. It was really interesting- I nicked the worksheets for work!

After the lecture we went to the pub- I had one drink and then was so tired I could barely keep my eyes open! I'm so exhausted.
All this thinking is very hard work.

Cambridge University Day 1

I'm on a course this weekend at Churchill college, Cambridge. Tis a Physics course, and I'm here because work have sent me-although I'd happily have come anyway as the program on the whole looks awesome!
On top of which, I'm going to see an awful lot of colleges without the inconvenience of having to pay or study. Bonus. This is the program for the 3 days:

I prepared for this by intending to revise how to calculate vectors, And then going out for dinner and watching Harry Potter last night. I will admit that I may have been distracted today and watched another Harry potter film on demand instead of doing any Mechanics.
Ah well.
Maybe I can blag it.
I suspect this will be a decision I regret tomorrow, at 9am. And again at 1. But as it is my own fault and I do only have myself to blame I'll just have to deal with it.

Traff dropped me off about 3pm, so that we could make sure we found the right place (This time the sat nav was right so it's redeemed itself).

I picked up my room keys from the Porters lodge and Traff came up with me to drop off my stuff. Frankly, I think my uni room at Glam was nicer. It was a little smaller but the bathroom was nicer, and the walls less marked.
Traff was gobsmaked. Bless him, I think he thought students lived in dormitories on bunk beds or something. He spent a while going through all the cupboards and lamenting that being a student seemed very kushy. I did point out that most students have to share a bathroom. Even that didn't change his mind.
The room looks out over the quad, which nice. lots of bushes.

After he left I went for a walk- I tried to buy a cuppa from the bar, but got my card declined :( It's like real university all over again! I have no idea why it won't work. No extra teas for me then. Post failed tea buying I went for a walk around the college and the grounds- this college has 42 acres of park, so it's incredibly quiet and peaceful. It's also very 60s. In the 70s the added loads of weird sculputres. Possibly to try and hide the 60s-ness of the place.
The only place I get any phone reception is the middle of the cricket pitch, so that too should add to the peaceful nature of the weekend.

The first meeting at 6 was all about a new initiative the university has for outreach, personally I think it's very good, and will be implementing it from September.

Dinner in St Catherines College was brilliant! The room was all oak panelled and hung with portraits of famous Cambridge graduates.
The food was awesome!
It wasn't much different from eating at a fancy wedding really.

I've been really excited about the formal dinner since I got told I was attending this course in February- I always intended to go to a formal dinner when I was working in Oxford- as sometimes we would get invitations from the other Museums (When I was working at the Museum of Oxford) who were university funded. I'm not really sure why I never did- Sometimes people from work get invited- We have research links with the Uni so if a department is helping them with something their HOD usually gets to go- One of my colleagues we telling me about how brilliant the food after one such invitation. But this has been my first formal university dining experience.

We returned to the college at 9pm. To be honest, I'm gutted that my Harry potter movie box set didn't come today as that would have been good to watch in the evening- We're quite far from town so no partying for me!
I did bring "Harry potter and the Order of the Phoenix" to read for the millionth time this week. I did try and bring a grown up book but I swapped it just before leaving.

Buddy's American Diner

Today, in the post I received my new diet plan from the hospital. I'll post a picture for your amusement next week. In light of my even further reduced calorie intake I decided we should go out for dinner.
:D
I've been angling to go to Buddies for a year now- It's a 30 minute drive from the house- it looks like it was once a little chef- so it's already got a very 50s diner look about it.

It took us a bit longer than 30 minutes, because my Sat nav took us a scary route, and when we came to a road block, it said we had reached our destination.

Traff just started laughing.
Stupid sat nav.

When we finally arrived I was not disappointed by the range of burgers available:
http://www.buddiesrestaurants.com/Menu%20ALL%20not%20BC%20March14%20NEW%20PRICES.pdf
I was boring and had a "sloppy joe" Traff had a "Hell's kitchen". I was seriously tempted to have an "American Mac" which comes with macaroni and cheese on top of it. They even have a marmite burger. The menu is just insane.

Burgers, Chips and sides were all lush- And I had a milkshake with mine too. :)
I will be returning and I encourage others to go! It might not be a glamourous location, but the burgers are brilliant!

We had pudding too- although regretted it as we were both super full.

On the way home we stopped off to see if Michelle and Aaron were home- Sadly they were off being sociable. Popping over to see if someones in- Very 90s, no?

Now that we're home, I've convinced Traff to watch Harry potter and the prisoner of Azkaban. Well, I'll watch it, we'll sleep on my leg.

Appeasing my Harry Potter addiction

Traff's just ordered me the box set of all the films off Amazon for £25- obviously they're pre-loved DVDs but I don't care!
:)

I've only watched the first part of the last film- I hated them when the first came out- mostly for the casting of Remus Lupin and Sirius black- but also for the masses of missing content. However, now that I am old and mellow I have a need to watch them.
Traff seems convinced they'll arrive on Saturday- which would render me even more useless than usual on a weekend- I think it's more likely to be midweek next week if I'm honest.

In the mean time I'm watching bits of films on youtube.
It's keeping me quiet.

The demolition date of Oxfordshire's Didcot A Power Station has been announced.
RWE NPower confirmed three of the southern cooling towers will be demolished in the morning of 27 July.
The company said the date and time of the work had been "the subject of careful consultation".
The demolition of the cooling towers is expected to take less than a minute, with the rest of the site taking up to three years to clear.
'Significant day'
A spokesman for the company said: "This is just the first milestone in the demolition of Didcot A Power Station but will be a significant change to the local landscape.
"We understand that the power station has been part of the local community for more than 42 years and for many people the demolition of these first three cooling towers will mark a significant day for Didcot and Oxfordshire."
RWE NPower closed the coal-fired facility in March 2013 after 43 years of service.
It said police, the Health & Safety Executive, Network Rail and traffic management had requested the demolition take place early on a Sunday morning to minimise disruption.
RWE Npower sold part of the site of Didcot A Power Station to Clowes Developments in April for commercial and residential use.

JK Rowling- What harry Potter would look like from Draco's perspective

Spotting this on buzzfeed has had two implications form me:

1) It's cheered me up- The cold I had on Sunday is now an Ear infection requiring antibiotics and feels like I'm being repeatedly bashed in the head, so I've been pretty grumpy so far today- and evidently I am not at work (Loud noises hurt and Standing up hurts- not to mention my hearing is now impaired. tricky for work)

2) This proves I'm not crazy for spending hours on Saturday wanting to know more about Sirius Black. I'd truly love her to write a book about his life and imprisonment in Azkaban.
Maybe I WILL write and ask her.
Although, I suspect this person may be a little younger than me.
Maybe I can make my handwriting messy and then she'll think I'm a kid...
Or maybe I am crazy- but now I know there are more equally crazy people.

Ah give me a break, I'm stuck at home with nothing better I can do. I have loads of work, but didn't bring any home with me. It's all on my desk. I did do some work emails so feel a bit less guilty.

A fan recently told J.K. Rowling over Twitter that she would love to hear the story of Harry Potter from Draco Malfoy’s perspective.

I would give anything to read Harry Potter from Draco's perspective@jk_rowling

Rowling’s responded perfectly with this screenshot from Tumblr.
